Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision in the Westover Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, July 9, 2021) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are conducting an investigation into a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in the Westover Division.

On Monday, June 28, 2021, at approximately 8:51 p.m., Westover Division officers responded to the 2800 block of South Tryon Street in reference to a collision involving a vehicle and a motorcycle. Upon arrival, officers located a 2008 Honda CBR1000 RR in the roadway. The operator, identified as Clifton Chapman, DOB: 12/12/1985, was seriously injured and transported by Medic to Atrium Health - Main with life-threatening injuries. The other motor vehicle and operator failed to remain on the scene.

On Tuesday, June 29, 2021, through information and evidence gathered, officers with CMPD's Westover Division and Major Crash Investigation Unit positively identified a 1993 Honda Civic as the suspect vehicle from this collision. Furthermore, the operator of the suspect vehicle was identified as Maynor Alexander Garcia-Zelaya, DOB: 12/05/1992.

The results of the investigation showed that Chapman was traveling north in the right lane of travel on South Tryon Street.  The Honda Civic pulled out of a parking lot at 2813 South Tryon Street in front of Chapman, causing him to strike the left side of the Honda Civic. The Honda Civic failed to remain at the scene and did not contact law enforcement officials. Impairment is unknown for either driver; however, Chapman wore a helmet and obeyed all traffic laws.

On Wednesday, July 7, 2021, at 4:30 p.m., Chapman was pronounced deceased at Atrium Health - Main due to injuries sustained in this crash. His family has been notified of his death.

On Friday, July 9, 2021, detectives obtained warrants for Maynor Garcia-Zelaya's arrest.  He will be charged with Felony Hit & Run, Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle, and Driving While License Revoked

The investigation into this collision is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by CMPD's Public Affairs Office.
