Westover Division - Homicide in the 5900 block of South Boulevard

Case Update:  Wednesday, May 1, 2019

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit have charged Gerardo Lagunes, DOB: 01/05/02 and Juan Deras Escalante, DOB: 07/15/2000, for the murder of Domingo Venancio-Tapia. 

As a result of continued investigation into this case, Homicide Unit detectives identified Lagunes and Escalante as suspects in this case.  On Tuesday, April 30, 2019, members from the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team located and arrested Gerardo Lagunes.  Lagunes was transported to police headquarters and interviewed.  Upon completion of the interview, Lagunes was transferred to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office and charged with Murder.

On Tuesday, April 30, 2019, at approximately 3:11 p.m., the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT)  responded near the 5600 block of Coulee Place in reference to an attempt to locate call for service to serve warrants related to a homicide.  VCAT attempted to make contact with Juan Escalante but were unsuccessful. Members of the SWAT Team and Negotiators were activated and responded to the scene, set up a perimeter and continued to attempt to make contact with the Escalante.  As a precaution, officers relocated nearby residents.  Representatives of the Westover Division, K-9 Unit, State Bureau of Investigations, and United States Secret Service also responded to the scene.

After an eight hour standoff with SWAT and not speaking with Negotiators, Escalante was taken into custody without incident and was transported to Police Headquarters where he will be interviewed by detectives.  Upon completion of the interview, he will be transferred to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office and charged with Murder, Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill, and 4 counts of Shooting into Occupied Property.

This is an ongoing, active investigation.  As further information develops it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.

The victim in this case has been identified as Domingo Venancio-Tapia, DOB: 09/13/1977.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation near the 5900 block of South Boulevard, which is in the Westover Division.  The call for service came in at approximately 10:54 p.m.

Westover Division officers responded to the Restaurante Lempira located at 5906 South Boulevard to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service.  Upon their arrival they located an adult male who was directly in front of the restaurant with an apparent gunshot wound.  MEDIC pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.  His name will be released once his family has been notified of his death. 

The initial investigation has indicated that the victim had been inside the restaurant and was shot within a few minutes of exiting the building.

Homicide detectives are currently canvassing the area to determine whether there are additional witnesses to this incident.

Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence.  Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team, Victim's Assistance and Operations Command responded to the scene.
