On January 23, 2019, at 2:25 p.m., Westover Division officers responded to a serious injury crash involving two vehicles in the 3300 block of West Boulevard. An unoccupied 2019 Freightliner flatbed double axel truck had been struck in the rear by a 2006 Hyundai Sonata. Fire and Medic responded, and Medic transported the driver of the Hyundai to Atrium Health with life threatening injuries. At 3:09 p.m., the driver succumbed to those injuries and was pronounced deceased at Atrium Health. Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, officers with the DWI Task Force and Motor Unit, and Crime Scene Investigators were called to the scene to conduct the investigation.
The initial investigation has revealed that the Freightliner flatbed double axel truck was parked in the right travel lane facing east on West Boulevard. The truck had its flashers on and had been parked there for approximately an hour and a half. The Hyundai was traveling east in the right lane and struck the rear of the flatbed of the Freightliner. The driver was the only occupant of the Hyundai.
Speed and impairment do not appear to be contributing factors. The driver of the Hyundai was not wearing her seatbelt. There are no known witnesses to the crash, but three employees with the company that owns the Freightliner did hear the crash, and they were all interviewed on scene.
Any person who witnessed this crash or has information about this case is asked to call Detective Pressley at 704-432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
