***UPDATE*** University City Division - Homicide in the 8900 block of Avebury Drive

Case Update:  Monday, November 26, 2018,

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department homicide detectives have charged George Ivan Hayes, DOB: 4/29/1993, with the murder of Kendric Washington.

Information gathered during the course of this investigation led detectives to identify Hayes as the suspect and a warrant was obtained for his arrest.  Officers with the CMPD Violent Crime Apprehension Team located Hayes earlier this morning and were able to take him into custody without incident.  Hayes was subsequently transported to police headquarters where he was interviewed by homicide detectives. At the conclusion of the interview, Hayes was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office and charged with Murder.

Case Update: Wednesday, November 21, 2018,

The victim in this case has been identified as Kendric Washington, DOB: 05/16/1996.  His family has been notified of his death.

Tuesday, November 20, 2018,

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 8900 block of Avebury Drive in the University City Division.  The call for service came in at 8:37 p.m. on Tuesday, November 20, 2018. 

University City Division patrol officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service.  Upon their arrival, officers located a male in the common area of the apartment complex with an apparent gunshot wound.  CPR was performed,  however the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.  His name will be released once his family has been notified.

Homicide Detectives are currently canvassing the area to determine whether there are any witnesses to this incident. 

Crime Scene Search responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence.  Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team, Operations Command, and Victim Services responded to the scene.
