***UPDATE*** University City Division - Homicide in the 3000 block of Azalea Hills Drive

Charlotte, N.C. – (Saturday, February 29, 2020) – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide detectives have charged Tyquis Syjuan Jenkins, DOB: 12/26/1992, with the murder of Nathaniel Raul Newberry. 

Officers with the University City Division made contact with Jenkins at the scene on Azalea Hills Drive when they first arrived at the homicide.  He was interviewed by detectives at CMPD Headquarters, and at the conclusion of the interview, he was placed under arrest.  Jenkins has been transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Jail.  Detectives have determined that Tyquis Jenkins and Nathaniel Newberry knew each other prior to this incident.

Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, February 28, 2020) – The victim in this case has been identified as Nathaniel Raul Newberry, DOB: 12/26/89.  His family has been notified of his death.

Charlotte, N.C. - (Friday, February 28, 2020) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 3000 block of Azalea Hills Drive in the University City Division.  The call for service came in at 3:53 p.m. 

University City patrol officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service.  Upon arrival, officers located a male with a gunshot wound in front of a residence on Azalea Hills Drive.  He was transported to the hospital by Medic and later pronounced deceased by hospital staff.  The victim's identity will be released pending family notification. 

Homicide Detectives are currently canvassing the area to determine whether there are any additional witnesses to this incident. 

Crime Scene Search responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence.  Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team, Victim Services, CFD, Medic, and Operations Command responded to the scene.
