Charlotte, N.C. – (Saturday, May 29, 2021) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Independence Division have charged Maurice Thompson, DOB: 10/08/1998, a 16-year-old juvenile and a 15-year-old juvenile for their involvement in a series of recent crimes.
On May 20, 2021, Independence Division officers responded to the 5800 block of Cedars East Court in reference to an armed robbery from a person call for service. Upon arrival, the victim advised that an unknown suspect took property from his immediate possession by the threat of a firearm. On May 21, 2021, at approximately 12:26 a.m., officers with the Central Division located a stolen vehicle that was also believed to be used in the armed robbery on Cedars East Court. When officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle, it failed to stop and a pursuit ensued. The pursuit continued into the Independence Division, where the vehicle crashed on Reddman Road. All three occupants were quickly apprehended without further incident and transported to the Independence Division Office for interviews. Following the interview, Thompson was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's office and charged with Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Felony Possession of Cocaine, and Resist Public Officer. Furthermore, the 16-year-old juvenile male was charged with Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Felony Flee to Elude and Resist Public Officer, while the 15-year-old was charged with Possession of a Stolen Vehicle and Resist Public Officer.
As the investigation continued, officers obtained additional information that led them to re-interview Thompson and the 16-year-old. Following these interviews, detectives seized eight firearms and charged the 16-year-old with Possession of a Stolen Firearm and five counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Minor. Detectives also connected Thompson to two other recent armed robberies. He was additionally charged with two counts of Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and two counts of Conspiracy to Commit Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon. The additional cases cleared with his arrest are 20210520-0703-02 (Independence Division) and 20210510-0612-01 (Eastway Division).
This investigation was a collaborative effort between multiple patrol divisions, including Central, Independence, Hickory Grove, and Eastway.
Detectives are actively reviewing additional cases to determine if Thompson and these two juveniles may have been involved.
