Targeted Enforcement Efforts Increasing Against "Street Takeover" Groups
Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, February 27, 2023) – Today, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) discussed its enforcement efforts on reckless and aggressive driving in Charlotte.
Between Friday, February 24, and the early morning hours of Sunday, February 26, CMPD's Transportation Division along with the assistance of several other patrol divisions, responded to multiple "street takeover" incidents across Charlotte involving hundreds of vehicles.
The targeted enforcement resulted in the following:

Cell-phone video of burnouts captured in Uptown around 3 a.m. on February 26, at the intersection of S. Brevard & E. Brooklyn Village, was just one of these weekend street takeover incidents. Central Division officers responded to the intersection and investigated a hit-and-run crash involving a light pole. The vehicle involved is being held as evidence. No charges in the hit-and-run crash have been filed at this time.
The CMPD does not take this issue lightly and the Transportation Division has ramped up its efforts to deter these incidents. Enforcement in the month of February has resulted in the following:
- 54 citations
- 5 arrests
- 11 vehicles towed/held as evidence
- 1 vehicle seized
- 1 firearm seized
The CMPD will continue to target street takeover and street racing groups and conduct enforcement operations. The CMPD is also requesting the public's help in reporting public safety issues. If citizens see these groups driving recklessly and behaving erratically, they're asked not to engage but call 911.
