Suspects charged in shooting incident in the Central Division

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Central Division have charged Howard Kevin Wright, DOB: 01/10/1984, Kevin Demetrius Thompson, DOB: 05/16/1987, and Dereke Bolton, DOB: 12/13/1981, for their involvement in a shooting into an occupied dwelling incident in the Central Division.

On February 28, 2016, at approximately 4:43 a.m., G4S with Transit Police reported hearing multiple gun shots near South Caldwell Street and observed a black male fleeing the scene towards a Nissan Altima. G4S Police were able to obtain a vehicle tag and observed the vehicle flee westbound onto E. 4th Street and also determined that no one was injured in the shooting.

Officers with the Central Division located and conducted a felony traffic stop on the suspect vehicle in the 700 block of W. 5th Street. The rear passenger jumped and ran from the vehicle and had in his possession an AK-47. Officers pursued this suspect on foot into a parking deck in the 700 block of W. 5th Street. Officers were able to take the suspect into custody without further incident and identified him as Howard Wright. The AK-47 was located with Wright and another pistol was located on Wright's person. The two other occupants of the vehicle were apprehended without incident and identified as Demetrius Thompson and Dereke Bolton. Officers located two additional weapons in the vehicle.

Crime scene responded to the scene to collect evidence. Multiple fired shell casings were collected from the scene and were consistent to the firearms that were collected from the suspects. Approximately 40-50 shots were fired into two vehicles and into the lobby door of the Hyatt Hotel.

Information gathered by detectives initial indications are that this was not a random act of violence.

All three suspects were transported to police headquarters to be interviewed by Central Detectives. They were subsequently transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. All three suspects were charged with 3 counts of Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling and Discharging a Firearm in City Limits. Thompson and Wright were also charged with Carrying a Concealed Weapon - Gun.
