Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, June 24, 2022) – Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team worked alongside negotiators and officers from multiple patrol divisions to successfully de-escalate and apprehend a suspect who had fired gunshots at officers.

Shortly after 11:31 p.m. on June 23, 2022, patrol officers responded to a call for service in reference to a person in crisis at a residence in the 5800 block of Hunting Ridge Lane. Upon arrival, officers established dialogue with the person who then fired multiple gunshots at the officers, and shot into an unoccupied marked police car. The officers were able to move to a position of cover and call for additional officers and the CMPD SWAT Team. Officers were able to establish a perimeter around the residence where the suspect was located to make sure that there was not a threat to the community. There was no indication that anyone else was inside of the residence other than the suspect.

The SWAT team and negotiators arrived on scene and were able to successfully de-escalate with the suspect. He exited the residence on his own and was taken into custody without incident. The suspect was transported to an area hospital to receive treatment pursuant to an Involuntary Commitment Order issued by a Magistrate.

No police officers fired their weapons during this incident.

The CMPD Community Policing Crisis Response Team was called. Crisis Intervention Team officers responded. Medic and the Charlotte Fire Department also assisted.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing to determine what the suspect will be criminally charged with. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Office. For additional information about this case, please refer to the report: 20220623-2331-00.
