Suspect Arrested in Armed Robbery Series

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit have arrested and charged a man in connection to an armed robbery series in Charlotte.

Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, January 20, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit have arrested and charged a man in connection to an armed robbery series in Charlotte.

On Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at approximately 3:36 p.m., Hickory Grove Division Officers responded to an armed robbery from business call for service at Walgreens in the 7100 block of East W.T. Harris Blvd. Upon arrival, officers were advised that a black male suspect entered the business pointed the handgun at the cashier and demanded property.  The suspect took the property before leaving the store. The robbery was captured on the store's surveillance system.

 

After the Walgreens robbery, four additional robberies occurred.  Robbery detectives were called back to investigate all of these cases.  In the late hours on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, Criminal Intelligence Division and the Real Time Crime Center assisted detectives and located a license plate tag for a vehicle the suspect was seen in at several robbery locations. 

 

In the morning hours on Thursday, January 19, 2023, officers with the Crime Gun Suppression Team (CGST) and the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT), arrested the suspect, Jamaris Smith, without incident.  He was transported to the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) in uptown to be interviewed.  Following the interview, Mr. Smith was transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Department and was charged in the following robberies:

 

  • 20230117-2312-01 (Sam's Mart)
  • 20230118-1536-05 (Walgreens)
  • 20230118‐2038‐01 (CVS)
  • 20230118‐2312‐00 (Circle K)
  • 20230119‐0120‐01 (7-Eleven)
  • 20230119‐0614‐00 (Burger King)

 

The arrest of this suspect was a collaborative effort across the CMPD.  We would like to extend a thank you to the Real Time Crime Center (RTCC), the Crime Analysis Unit, the Crime Gun Suppression Team (CGST), the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT), and our Robbery Detectives who not only worked this investigation, but numerous other robbery investigations separate from this robbery spree.
