On Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at approximately 4:46 p.m., officers in the Central Division attempted to make a traffic stop following a License Plate Reader hit. The driver of the vehicle was wanted on several warrants out of Cleveland County including Felony Assault on Law Enforcement.  Officers attempted to pull the driver over on South Tryon Street near Good Samaritan Way. The driver, identified as Peter Benjamin Roberson (DOB 10/12/1976), fled from the traffic stop at a high rate of speed, sideswiping a vehicle going in the opposite direction.

Officers did not initiate a pursuit because CMPD's helicopter was in the area and monitoring the suspect's location while coordinating with officers on the ground. Mr. Roberson continued to drive recklessly and struck another vehicle in a parking lot in the 1100 block of Mint Street before speeding off again. Mr. Roberson eventually ran a 4-way stop at the intersection of Camden Road and Park Avenue where his vehicle collided with a Lexus sedan. Mr. Roberson ran from the suspect vehicle and was chased on foot by officers who arrested him without further incident. Mr. Roberson was charged with 3 counts of Hit & Run, Felony Fleeing to Elude, and Resisting/Delaying/Obstructing a Law Enforcement Officer.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Office. For additional information about this case, please refer to the report: 20230118-1646-04.
