Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have charged a seventeen-year-old male student for carrying a gun on the campus of West Charlotte High School.
On Friday, August 31, 2018, at approximately 9:23 a.m., the School Resource Officer of West Charlotte High School was alerted to a group of high school students on the campus that were loitering. The officer initiated contact with the group and asked for consent to search. Upon conducting a search of one of the students, that student proceeded to try and pull away from the officer. During the struggle, the officer observed a gun in the student's waistband. The student, identified as Nelson Smith, DOB: 10/28/2000, was taken into custody by the officer without further incident. The gun was seized and found to be loaded.
Smith was charged with Carrying a Concealed Weapon and Gun on an Educational Property and transported to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office. The report number for this incident is 20180831-0923-02.
