On Thursday, March 7, 2019 at approximately 9:38 p.m., Steele Creek Division officers responded to the 9900 block of S. Tryon Street in reference to a single motor vehicle crash call for service. Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive male inside a 1992 Ford Mustang off the roadway, overturned on its side against a utility pole. Medic arrived on the crash scene and pronounced the driver of the Ford Mustang, Barry Warrez Sims, deceased on scene. There were no other passengers in the Ford Mustang. Detectives with the Major Crash Unit and the D.W.I. Task Force responded to conduct an investigation.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the Ford Mustang was traveling northeast on S. Tryon Street and traveled off the roadway to the right, striking a raised concrete curb. After striking the curb, the Ford Mustang traveled down an embankment, approximately 200 feet, before overturning onto the driver's side and striking a utility pole. Mr. Sims was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and test results are pending for the consumption of alcoholic beverages prior to this crash. At this time, it is unknown as to the circumstances to why the Ford Mustang traveled off the roadway, however speed is not a factor in this crash.
This crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Detective Crum with the Major Crash Investigations Unit at 704-432-2169 Ext4.
