On Saturday, March 30, 2019 at approximately 1:54 p.m., Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Steele Creek Division responded to the 9900 block of S. Tryon Street in response to a motor vehicle crash. Upon their arrival, the officers located two vehicles that had been involved in the crash, a 2005 Toyota Camry occupied by an unresponsive male driver and a 2001 Mack 600 garbage/recycling truck with an uninjured male driver. There were not any other occupants in either vehicle. Medic pronounced the driver of the Toyota Camry, Colby Charles Davis, deceased at the scene. Detectives with CMPD's Major Crash Unit and the D.W.I. Task Force responded to conduct the investigation.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the Toyota Camry turned left onto S. Tryon Street from Nevada Boulevard and began traveling southbound in the northbound travel lane, against traffic, on the wrong side of the median. The Toyota then turned right in an attempt to cross the center grass median, but before it was able to do so the Toyota was struck by the Mack truck which was traveling north on S. Tryon Street. Speed is not a factor for the Mack truck and the driver, Frankie Millsaps, was not impaired nor did he consume alcoholic beverages prior to this crash. Speed is not a factor for the Toyota Camry, however alcohol use is suspected for the victim and test results are pending. Both drivers in this crash were wearing seatbelts.
This crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Detective Buckley with the Major Crash Investigations Unit at 704-432-2169 Ext6.
