Charlotte, N.C. - (Monday, March 23, 2020) - The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit is conducting a traffic fatality investigation that occurred in the 13900 block of Erwin Road in the Steele Creek Division.
On Sunday, March 22, 2020, at 8:11 p.m., officers responded to reports of a motor vehicle collision on Erwin Road. Upon their arrival, the Officers located a 2006 Lexus which had struck a tree. The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver has been identified as Thaddeus Olvin Dewese.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct the investigation. Their initial investigation has revealed that the Lexus was being driven at a high rate of speed east on Erwin Road when it left the roadway to the left and struck a tree. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt. Excessive speed is a contributing factor to this crash and alcohol use is suspected.
This crash remains under investigation. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Office.
