***UPDATE*** South Division - Homicide in the 1200 block of Paperbark Circle

Case Update: Tuesday, November 26, 2019

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit have charged Derrick Allen McIlwain, DOB: 02/10/1978, for the murder of Alvin Fletcher.

On November 26, 2019, McIlwain was arrested in Rock Hill, South Carolina with the assistance of CMPD's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT), the Rock Hill Police Department, SLED and the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office.  Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit will be traveling to Rock Hill to interview McIlwain.  He has also been charged with a murder in South Carolina and will transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office upon extradition.  The extradition process has already been implemented, but there is no current timetable on his return to Mecklenburg County.

Case update: Monday, November 11, 2019

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's (CMPD) Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) are requesting the public's assistance in locating Derrick Allen McIlwain, DOB: 02/10/1978, who is wanted for the murder of Alvin Fletcher.

As a result of continued investigation, Homicide Unit detectives identified McIlwain as a suspect in this case, and a murder warrant was issued for his arrest.  Detectives with the CMPD's VCAT, who have been diligently looking for McIlwain, have information which leads them to believe McIlwain may be in North Carolina, South Carolina, or the Atlanta, Georgia area.

This is an active and ongoing investigation.  As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Office.

The victim in this case has been identified as Alvin Fletcher, DOB:12/19/1973.  His family has been notified of his death.

Thursday, November 7, 2019

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 12000 block of Paperbark Circle.  The call for service came in at 3:51 p.m. on Thursday, November 7, 2019. 

South Division officers responded to a death investigation call for service.  Officers located an adult male with apparent trauma inside of a residence. He was pronounced at the scene. His name will be released once his family has been notified.

Homicide Detectives responded to the scene and are currently canvassing the area to determine whether there are any additional witnesses to this incident. 

Crime Scene Search has responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence.  Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team, Victim Services, Medic, CFD, and Operations Command responded to the scene.
