***UPDATE*** South Division - Homicide in the 11400 block of Glenn Abbey Way

2/25/2019

Case Update: Monday, February 25, 2019

A third person has died in connection with this case. John James Bocek, DOB 3/22/1995, died on Sunday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had been transported from the scene with life-threatening injuries.

Through their investigation, detectives determined that Bocek knew a 16-year-old girl who lives in the home.

The investigation has revealed that Bocek forced his way into the home on Sunday morning. While inside, he fatally shot Matthew Allen Chaplin, who was the father of the 16-year-old, and Jenna Elizabeth Hewitt (DOB 5/28/2003) a 15-year-old friend who was a guest for the night.

After her friend and father were shot, the 16-year-old was able to run to a neighbor's house and call 911. She was not physically harmed in this incident.

At the time of this incident, CMPD had warrants charging Bocek with robbery and assault with a deadly weapon in connection with a crime that occurred at this same address last week. In the earlier incident, Bocek was accused of physically assaulting the 16-year-old and then taking her telephone. Officers had been unable to locate Bocek to serve the warrants in that case (2019-0220-1804-00).
