South Division - Fatality in the 5700 block of Providence Road

Sunday, November 24, 2019

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Unit are investigating a fatal vehicle crash in the South Division.

On Sunday, November 24, 2019 at approximately 3:34 p.m., South and Independence Division officers responded to the 5700 block of Providence Road in reference to a single motor-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian. Upon their arrival, officers located a 2008 Nissan Altima that was being driven by Eileen Redmond Miller.  They also located a pedestrian, Rhonda Michelle Cook, who had been struck by the Nissan.  Medic arrived on scene and transported the pedestrian to Atrium Health's Carolinas Medical Center where she was later pronounced deceased.  Eileen Miller and her passenger did not sustain any injuries in this crash.   The Major Crash Unit responded to conduct the investigation.

The preliminary investigation has revealed that the Rhonda Cook was crossing Providence Road near Old Providence Road when she was struck by the Nissan Altima.  The Nissan had been traveling southbound on Providence Road in the left straight lane at the time of the crash.  Neither speed or impairment are contributing factors for the Nissan in this crash.  A crosswalk was not being used by Rhonda Cook when she was struck.  No charges have been filed against Eileen Miller at this time.
