Robbery Suspect Charged with Second Degree Murder Following Fatal Crash

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, June 3, 2021) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit have charged Tony Alphonso Damian Holmes, DOB: 11/22/1990, for his involvement in a recent robbery and fatality crash.

Shortly before 8:30 a.m., on June 3, 2021, Metro Division officers observed a vehicle being operated carelessly and recklessly as it exited the parking lot of the Family Dollar located at 3618 Beatties Ford Road. After speaking with employees, officers learned that the driver had just stolen items from the store.  The vehicle fled inbound on Beatties Ford at a high rate of speed before losing control and striking a bus stop enclosure and the subject seated inside it.  After observing officers, the driver fled on foot but was quickly apprehended without incident.  The subject struck by the vehicle was transported to Atrium Health Main, where he was pronounced deceased a short time later due to injuries sustained in the crash.  The victim has been identified as Henry Miller, DOB: 03/05/1964.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, Armed Robbery Unit, Homicide Unit, and Crime Scene Search responded to conduct the investigation and collect physical evidence.  Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team also responded to assist.

The initial investigation has revealed that Holmes entered the Family Dollar and stole property by the threat of a firearm. After the robbery, Holmes left the scene in a black 1995 Dodge Ram and was observed driving at a high rate of speed while weaving in and out of traffic.  Holmes lost control of the vehicle and crossed the outbound travel lanes before striking the curb and then the bus stop enclosure.   Miller was seated on the bench in the bus stop enclosure at the time of the crash.  Before that crash, Holmes also struck another vehicle on Beatties Ford Road.  He failed to stop at the scene of that crash, which resulted in property damage only.

In addition to reckless driving, excessive speed and impairment are suspected to be contributing factors to this crash.  Toxicology results for Holmes are pending.

After his arrest, Holmes was interviewed by detectives.  Following the interview, he was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office and charged with Armed Robbery, Misdemeanor Hit and Run, Reckless Driving, Driving While Impaired, Felony Death by Vehicle, Felony Hit and Run, and Second Degree Murder.

This is an ongoing, active investigation.  As further information develops, it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.  Any witnesses to the crash, or anyone with information concerning the crash, should contact Detective Pressley at 704-432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
