On July 02, 2018 at 9:32 p.m., Providence Division officers were dispatched to the 2200 block of E. Independence Boulevard for a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle call for service. Upon officers arrival they located the pedestrian in the center lane of E. Independence Boulevard and a 2016 Hyundai Sonata with front end damage parked on the right shoulder. MEDIC personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced the pedestrian deceased. The driver of the vehicle stopped a short distance away from the area of impact.
Members of the Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force and Crime Scene Search were called in to conduct the investigation. It was determined that the pedestrian was walking on the shoulder of the road when the vehicle drifted over and struck him. The driver was transported to Carolinas Medical Center main by MEDIC with minor injuries and was screened for alcohol and/or drug use. The driver was then arrested for misdemeanor death by vehicle and transported to the Mecklenburg County Intake Center.
The initial investigation suggests excessive speed may be a factor in this case.
Drug and or alcohol use are not factors for the driver. It is unknown if the pedestrian was impaired.
