Providence Division officers responded to a single vehicle crash with injuries located in the 1300 block of Runnymede Lane. Members of the Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also responded to the scene. When officers arrived, they located a white four door Cadillac ATS that had struck the curb and ran off the road to the right. The Cadillac continued traveling and drove through a wooden privacy fence, traveled through a creek and struck a large tree. The driver and passenger were both transported from the scene to Atrium Health's Carolinas Medical Center.  The front passenger suffered life threatening injuries and the driver had minor injuries. The front passenger was pronounced deceased at Atrium Health's Carolinas Medical Center at 8:24 a.m.

The initial investigation shows the Cadillac was traveling east in the right lane of Runnymede Lane. The vehicle struck the curb to the right and drove onto the sidewalk. The vehicle continued traveling and struck a wooden privacy fence and drove into a small creek before striking a large tree.

The driver and the front seat passenger were not wearing seatbelts. The front seat passenger was a child that should have been in an appropriate child seat for his age and weight.

Speed and inattention appear to be a factor in this case. Alcohol use by the driver is not a factor.
