Providence Division - Homicide in the 500 block of Briar Creek Road

Sunday, December 30, 2018,

Detectives with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit have charged Jamie Lord Harris, DOB: 03/24/1983 for his involvement in this case.

On Sunday, December 30, 2018, detectives were able to identify the victim as John Michael Songer, DOB: 04/05/1972. His next of kin has been notified of his death.   

During the course of their investigation, detectives identified Harris as the suspect and obtained warrants for his arrest. Harris was located and arrested without incident. He was then transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sherriff's Office. Harris has been charged with Murder and Possession of a Firearm by Convicted Felon.

This is an active and ongoing investigation. As further information develops it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.

Sunday, December 30, 2018,

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation at 510 Briar Creek Road in the Providence Division.  The call for service came in at 11:40 p.m. on Saturday, December 29, 2018.

Providence Division patrol officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service at Smokey Joe's Cafe located at 510 Briar Creek Road. Upon their arrival officers located an adult male victim with an apparent gunshot wound.  He was pronounced deceased at the scene by MEDIC.  

The initial investigation indicates that the unknown suspect(s) fired several shots into the parking lot and at the building of the bar.  The victim, an adult male, was standing outside the building in a patio area when he was struck by a bullet. 

Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence.  Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team, Victim Services and Operations Command responded to the scene.  In addition, Detectives with the CMPD ABC Unit and Special Investigations Unit responded as well.

This is an ongoing, active investigation.  As further information develops it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.
