Charlotte, N.C. – Charlotte Area Transit System will begin revenue service of the LYNX Blue Line Extension Mar. 16, 2018. Pre-revenue service testing is scheduled to begin the week of Jan. 21. During this testing, CATS will simulate revenue service from I-485 Station to the UNC Charlotte Main Station. Light rail vehicles will stop at all stations mimicking passenger boarding/deboarding with active crossing signals; however, no passengers will ride the trains. Stations are not open to the public until Mar.16.
CATS has completed the majority of the required tests to begin pre-revenue service. This includes the testing of tracks, the overhead catenary system, and communications and signal systems. Many safety certifications are built into these component tests.
CATS will have two emergency drills in January including a bridge evacuation drill being coordinated with the Charlotte Fire Department and a full-scale emergency exercise.
The project remains under budget and meets the Federal Transit Administration's full-funding grant agreement deadline of Mar. 31, 2018. Details about grand opening activities will be provided at a later date.
