Officer Involved Shooting in the University City Division

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is conducting a CMPD officer-involved shooting investigation in the 2700 block of Billings Park Drive in the University City Division.

On Saturday, January 21, 2023, at 1:04 p.m., officers responded to a residence in the 2700 block of Billings Park Drive to serve an Involuntary Commitment Order. While officers were preparing to serve the order, multiple calls for service were placed through 911 regarding a Communicating Threats and an Assault with a Deadly Weapon at the same residence.

While officers were working to contain the scene, they observed an armed subject at the residence actively shooting. Officers quickly mobilized to respond to the active threat. One CMPD officer discharged his weapon at a subject who had just fired gunshots. Officers immediately rendered medical aid to those injured.

No officers were injured. Two subjects were transported by Medic with non-life-threatening injuries. A firearm was located on the scene.

The SBI is leading the investigation into the CMPD officer-involved shooting. CMPD Internal Affairs will conduct a simultaneous, parallel investigation. The CMPD Homicide Unit will lead the investigation into any potential underlying crimes that led to the officer-involved shooting.

Representatives from CMPD's Operations Command, Homicide Unit, Charlotte Fire Department, Medic, Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Office, Peer Support also assisted.
