The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit is conducting a traffic fatality investigation that occurred in the 4400 block of The Plaza. On Monday July 23rd, 2018 at 9:59 p.m., North Tryon Division officers responded to a personal injury crash on The Plaza near Eastway Drive where a pedestrian had been struck. Upon arrival, officers located a 2008 Honda Accord with front-end damage and a pedestrian in the roadway with injuries. MEDIC pronounced the pedestrian deceased at the scene. Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, officers with the DWI Task Force, and Crime Scene Investigators were called to the scene to conduct the investigation.
The initial investigation has revealed that Barry Otis Mahoney was the pedestrian attempting to cross The Plaza at the 4400 block, just prior to Eastway Drive. Mr. Mahoney was walking from west to east when he walked from the median directly into the path of the 2008 Honda Accord which was traveling north on The Plaza. Mr. Mahoney was struck by the right front corner of the Honda and thrown into the windshield. The driver of the Honda, Jimel Eddie Tamba, remained at the scene and attempted to render aid to Mr. Mahoney.
Barry Mahoney was not crossing the street at an intersection, and there was no marked crosswalk or electronic pedestrian crossing signals to aid pedestrians crossing in the roadway.
Excessive speed and impairment are not suspected as contributing factors in this crash. No other vehicles were involved. Mr. Tamba was interviewed on scene and arrested for Driving While License Revoked and No Liability Insurance.
Any person who witnessed the crash or has information about this case is asked to call Officer Pressley at 704-432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
