North Tryon Division - Major Crash Detectives investigating a double fatality on Eastway Drive

Friday, May 11, 2018,

On Friday, May 11, 2018 at 7:37a.m., North Tryon Division officers responded to a four vehicle crash in the 200 block of Eastway Drive near Curtiswood Drive. Upon arrival, officers located a 2013 Honda Civic, a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck, a 2006 Ford Van, and a 2017 Hyundai Accent in the roadway. All of the vehicles had been involved in a collision. MEDIC arrived and pronounced one of the victims deceased on scene at 7:50a.m. A juvenile victim was transported to Carolinas Medical Center Main, however the juvenile victim was pronounced deceased while in transport, at 8:14a.m. The operator of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado was transported by MEDIC to Carolinas Medical Center University with minor injury. The operator and the passenger of the 2006 Ford Van were transported to Carolinas Medical Center Main with non-life threatening injuries. The passenger of the 2013 Honda Civic was transported to Carolinas Medical Center Main with minor injury and the operator remained on scene with no injury.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the 2013 Honda Civic, driven by Montressa Gray, was traveling northeast on Eastway Drive towards North Tryon Street in the right hand lane of travel. As the Honda passed the intersection of Curtiswood Drive, it changed lanes to the left hand lane of travel and sideswiped the 2006 Ford, driven by Fouad Mabhi. This caused the Ford to cross the center double yellow dividing line. When the Ford crossed the double yellow line, it struck the 2017 Hyundai Accent head on. The Hyundai was being driven by the victim, Alicia Mcfarland, who was traveling southwest on Eastway Dr. After the Hyundai was struck head on, it was then struck again by the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Terry Brown, in the right rear area. The 2004 Chevrolet then ran off the roadway to the right striking a utility power pole. The 2004 Chevrolet was also towing a trailer. The trailer did not detach during the crash.

At this time, it appears that all operators and occupants were wearing seat belts; however, the child seat for the juvenile victim was installed properly but the child was not restrained in the seat. Speed and alcohol are not factors in the crash at this time. The operator of the Honda, Montressa Jorice Gray, was arrested and charged with two counts of Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle, Expired Registration, and an unsafe movement. The deceased are mother and son. Next of kin has been notified.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Detective Crum with the Major Crash Investigations Unit at 704-432-2169.
