Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, March 17, 2020) – Detectives with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the North Tryon Division.
On March 15, 2020, at 1:15 p.m., North Tryon Division patrol officers responded to a Domestic Violence - Physical Assault call for service in the 6800 block of Delta Lake Drive. Upon arrival, officers determined that two family members had been involved in a physical altercation. A short time after the dispute, the victim, Sylvester Coswell, DOB: 09/02/1956, was transported to Atrium Main after complaining about a headache and then going unresponsive. When the victim arrived at the hospital, officers learned his condition was not survivable and immediately contacted the Homicide Unit to respond.
On March 16, 2020, Coswell was pronounced deceased. His family has been notified of his death.
On March 17, 2020, the Medical Examiner's Office ruled this case to be a homicide. Detectives with the Homicide Unit have spoken to all parties present during the altercation and determined they will not file charges. This case will be presented to the District Attorney's Office for review.
