Case Update: October 30, 2019
On October 30, 2019, the victim succumbed to his injuries at Atrium Health's Carolinas Medical Center. He has been identified as Darnel Mills, DOB: 09/21/1999, and his family has been notified of his death.
Homicide Unit detectives continue to actively investigate this case and have since charged Kehlan Johnson, DOB: 10/01/1978, with murder. He is currently in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting an investigation into a shooting which left one victim seriously injured and resulted in the arrest of Kehlan Johnson, DOB: 10/01/1978.
On Monday, October 21, 2019, at around 9:20 a.m., officers responded to reports of someone who had been shot near the 4800 block of East W T Harris Boulevard, which is in the North Tryon Division. When they arrived, they located an adult male with an apparent gunshot wound alongside a Nissan sedan. The victim was transported to the hospital by MEDIC with life-threatening injuries.
The preliminary investigation indicated the victim was a passenger of the aforementioned vehicle, and a second occupant of that vehicle had fled on foot. A CMPD Canine Unit responded to the scene to search for any suspects, but none were located. Detectives responded to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search technicians responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence.
Johnson met with Homicide Unit detectives at police headquarters, where he was interviewed. The evaluation of evidence gathered during the investigation resulted in warrants being issued for Johnson's arrest. Johnson has since been arrested and transferred to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office, where he has been charged with attempted first degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
