***UPDATE*** North Tryon Division - Homicide in the 1400 block of Ventura Way Drive

Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, September 3, 2021) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit have additionally charged a 16-year-old male juvenile for the murder of Samuel Stitt.

As a result of continued investigation, the juvenile was identified as a suspect in this case and a Secure Custody Order (SCO) was issued for his arrest. On September 3, 2021, the juvenile was arrested by our Violence Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) and transported to the LEC to speak with detectives.

At the conclusion of the interview, the juvenile was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office. The juvenile was charged with Murder, Attempted Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon, and Conspiracy to Commit Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon.

This is an active and ongoing investigation. Charlotte, N.C. – (Wednesday, August 18, 2021) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit have charged James Robert McIlwaine, DOB: 09/02/1991, for the murder of Samuel Stitt.

As a result of continued investigation, McIlwaine was identified as a suspect in this case, and warrants were issued for his arrest. McIlwaine is currently in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office for other non-related charges and will be served with warrants for Murder, Attempted Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and Conspiracy to Commit Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon.

The victim in this case has been identified as Samuel Harrison Stitt, DOB: 12/24/1995His family has been notified of his death.

Thursday, August 8, 2019

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation at 1400 block of Ventura Way Drive in the North Tryon Division.  The call for service came in at 8:47 p.m. on Thursday, August 8, 2019. 

North Tryon  Division Officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service.  Upon arrival, officers located a male with a gunshot wound inside of an apartment.   The victim was pronounced deceased on scene.  His identity will be released pending family notification. 

Detectives with the Homicide Unit responded to the scene and are currently canvassing the area to determine whether there are any additional witnesses to this incident. 

Crime Scene Search has responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence.  Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team, K-9, RTCC, Victim Services, Mobile Crisis, Medic, CFD and Operations Command responded to the scene.
