On September 20, 2018, at approximately 7:32 a.m., a suspect fired multiple rounds at a group of people in front of a motel, striking a 12-year-old boy who was waiting nearby for a school bus.

A Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Deputy was driving on W. Sugar Creek Road and observed the shooting. As the deputy approached, he saw the suspect get into the passenger side of a vehicle and flee. The deputy pursued and then the suspect fired at him from the moving vehicle. Neither the deputy nor his vehicle was struck.

The deputy pursued the vehicle on South I-85. As the deputy exited onto Brookshire Boulevard, he saw the vehicle with its doors open near Linwood Ave.  The occupants had fled.

The CMPD and the MCSO set up a perimeter and then received information from a community member that helped them locate one of the suspects. After a foot pursuit, one man was apprehended by a MCSO deputy and a CMPD officer at N. Hoskins and Woodman Avenue.

The second suspect has not yet been apprehended.  Officers recovered a gun believed to be used in the shooting.

The 12-year-old boy was transported by Medic to a local hospital where he is being treated for non-life threatening gunshot wound to the leg.

The deputy has been identified as Corey Thompson.  He was in uniform and in a marked MCSO vehicle.

Detectives are currently interviewing people who may have witnessed this incident.

This is an active and ongoing investigation.  As additional information develops it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.
