Case Update: Sunday, February 17, 2019
On Sunday, February 17th, 2019 at approximately 3:35 p.m., North Tryon Division officers conducted a traffic stop on a burgundy Nissan Murano driven by Steven Desario Horton, DOB: 9/11/1980. The Nissan had damage to the front hood, bumper, parking light and windshield which was consistent with a vehicle involved in a fatal hit and run that occurred on January 12th, 2019 on Reagan Drive. Mr. Horton was driving with a suspended license and arrested for Driving While License Revoked.
The officers contacted detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit and transported Mr. Horton to CMPD Headquarters to be interviewed. The Nissan Murano was driving was towed to the Crime Scene Bay to be processed for evidence. Vehicle debris previously collected at the scene of the fatal crash was positively matched to the Nissan driven by Horton.
At the conclusion of the interview, Steven Horton was also charged with Felony Hit and Run and transported to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.

On Saturday January 12, 2019, at 10:54 p.m., North Tryon Division officers responded to a hit and run injury crash in the 5100 block of Reagan Drive where a pedestrian had been struck. Medic and the Charlotte Fire Department also responded to the crash. The pedestrian was transported to Atrium Health (CMC) from the scene by Medic with critical injuries. Detectives with the North Tryon Division and Crime Scene Investigators were called to the scene to conduct the investigation.
The initial investigation has revealed that a burgundy SUV was traveling west on Reagan Drive and struck the pedestrian with the front of the vehicle. The pedestrian was thrown and came to rest on the roadway. The SUV immediately turned right into the parking lot of the Royal Inn and stopped. The driver exited the vehicle and walked over to the pedestrian lying on the roadway. The driver then returned to his vehicle and drove away from the scene without reporting the collision. The SUV was last seen turning right out of the parking lot of the Royal Inn traveling towards Graham Street.
On January 16, 2019, the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries at Atrium Health and was pronounced deceased at 8:46 p.m. The investigation has been reassigned to the Major Crash Investigation Unit of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
The crash is under investigation and CMPD is requesting the public's assistance. The suspect vehicle is a burgundy mid -sized SUV, possible a Nissan Rogue. The SUV has luggage roof rails and will have damage to the front bumper, headlight, hood and possible damage to the windshield. The driver is a white male or light-skinned black male or Latino. He is average build and approximately 5'-8" to 6' in height. Still pictures of the actual suspect vehicle are provided below from nearby surveillance video.
