The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit is conducting a fatality crash investigation that occurred in the 4900 block of The Plaza in the North Tryon Division. On Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 8:54 a.m., North Tryon Division officers responded to a call for service involving a single car crash. Upon arrival, officers located a 1997 Honda Civic with front end damage after striking an utility pole. The driver was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported by Medic to Atrium Health's Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries. On August 24th, 2019 at 8:04 p.m., the driver was pronounced deceased due to injuries sustained in the crash.
The initial investigation has revealed that Latravius Antonio Tate was the driver of the 1997 Honda Civic. He was observed traveling west in the 4900 block of the Plaza at a high rate of speed, recklessly swerving in and out of traffic. He then lost control and ran off the road to the right before striking an utility pole with the right front quarter panel of the vehicle. He was then ejected from the vehicle.
The license plate attached to the vehicle at the time of the crash was fictitious, and the vehicle was not currently registered. Next of kin has been notified.
Excessive speed is suspected as a contributing factor in this crash. It is unknown if impairment is a factor.
