The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Unit is conducting a fatality crash investigation in the North Tryon Division. On Friday, October 4, 2019 at 1:45 a.m., North Tryon Division officers and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) were dispatched to Interstate 85 near the I-85 connector for an assist Medic call for service. When NCSHP arrived, they located the victim, who was pronounced deceased on scene by Medic. Subsequently, NCSHP located a silver 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis down an embankment between the I-85 connector and Reagan Drive.  There were no occupants in the vehicle. A CMPD K-9 was called to the scene in an attempt to locate the driver and any other potential occupants of this suspect vehicle. No suspects were located.

During the crash investigation, a witness provided information that led officers to the 7-11 store located at 1120 West Sugar Creek Road.  Officers determined that the suspect vehicle had been at the 7-11 store prior to the crash and the victim had been in the vehicle.  When the victim entered the 7-11 store, the vehicle began to back out of the parking space.  The victim immediately exited the store and grabbed the front passenger door, holding onto the vehicle's exterior. The vehicle then drove out of the parking lot with the victim still holding onto the vehicle. The vehicle then entered onto I-85 northbound and the victim became separated from the vehicle and sustained life-threatening injuries.

The CMPD Major Crash Investigations Unit, DWI Task Force, Crime Scene Search and NCSHP were all contributors to this investigation.

It is not known if the driver or victim were impaired at the time of this event.
