Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision in the North Division


Charlotte, N.C. – (Friday, July 9, 2021) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal collision that occurred in the 5000 block of West W.T. Harris Blvd in the North Division.

On Saturday, July 3, 2021, at 2:09 p.m., North Division officers responded to a single-vehicle crash in the 5000 block of West W.T. Harris Blvd.  Upon arrival, officers located a 2011 Ford Crown Victoria that had run off the road to the left onto a grass median and struck a tree.  The driver, identified as Ufuk Tortumlu, DOB: 04/26/1982, was transported by Medic to Atrium Health - Main with serious injuries.  There were no other occupants in the vehicle.

On Thursday, July 8, 2021, Tortumlu was pronounced deceased at Atrium Health - Main due to injuries sustained in this crash.  His family has been notified of his death.

The Major Crash Investigation Unit has taken over the investigation of this case.   Impairment for Tortumlu is unknown, but toxicology results are pending.  Excessive speed is believed to be a contributing factor in this collision.  No other vehicles were involved. 

The investigation into this collision is active and ongoing.  As additional information develops, it will be released by CMPD’s Public Affairs Office.
