Tuesday, October 17, 2018,

On Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at 1:30a.m., North Division officers were dispatched to the 9800 block of Bellhaven Boulevard in reference to a single vehicle crash. Upon arrival, officers located a black Kia Optima which had traveled off the road to the left and was at the bottom of an embankment. The driver and passenger were both transported from the scene to Carolinas Medical Center.  The driver sustained life-threatening injuries and was pronounced deceased at 2:05 a.m. by ER staff.

Members of the Major Crash Unit, DWI Task Force, and Crime Scene Investigation were called in to conduct the investigation. The evidence on the roadway showed that the Kia Optima, operated by Diondre Price, was traveling northwest on Bellhaven Boulevard and ran off the road to the right. The driver then overcorrected, causing the vehicle to travel across both lanes of travel and run off the roadway to the left. The vehicle then traveled down an embankment, striking multiple trees before coming to a final resting position. The driver, Diondre Price, was fully ejected from the Kia.  The passenger, Miyatta Free, was partially ejected and sustained minor injuries.

Speed and alcohol are suspected in this crash. This crash remains under investigation.
