On Thursday, July 19, 2018 at approximately 1:22 p.m., officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's North Division responded to the 4600 block of W. WT Harris Blvd in reference to a four vehicle crash. Upon their arrival, the officers located a 2014 Freightliner moving truck, a 2016 Nissan Altima, a 2009 Toyota Camry, and a 2005 Chrysler 300 that had all been involved in a crash. Gregory Scott Pettis, the operator of the Chrysler, was pronounced deceased on scene by MEDIC. A total of 5 other individuals involved in this crash were transported to CMC- Main and CMC-University by MEDIC.
Members of the Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force and Crime Scene Search responded to the scene to conduct the investigation. Their preliminary investigation indicates that the 2005 Chrysler 300 was traveling southeast in the 5000 block of W. WT Harris Blvd in the left hand lane of travel behind a truck with a trailer attached to it. The Chrysler then changed lanes to a left turn lane, striking the trailer it was following as it accelerated past the truck and trailer. The Chrysler did not make a left turn but continued to accelerate, striking a raised curb and then entering the northwest lanes of travel. The Chrysler continued to accelerate and drive the wrong way on W. WT Harris Blvd at an estimated 80-100 MPH. The Chrysler then entered the intersection of Davis Lake Parkway and struck a 2014 Freightliner truck that was making a U-turn with a green light from the southeast to the northwest lanes of travel on W. WT Harris Blvd. The Freightliner was being operated by Zachery David Cullen. The Chrysler struck the Freightliner in the left side and traveled underneath the truck and exited out the right side. After exiting from underneath the truck, the Chrysler then struck a 2009 Toyota Camry, operated by OlaSunKanmi Eric Houngbo, head on. The Toyota had been stopped in the northwest lanes of travel on W. WT Harris Blvd while it was waiting for the red traffic light. After hitting the Toyota, the Chrysler rotated clockwise and off the roadway onto the outer shoulder of the northwest lanes of travel where it came to a rest. The Toyota was forced backwards and struck a 2016 Nissan Altima, operated by Natalie Aloma Leslie Ann Frederick. The Nissan had been stopped behind the Toyota also waiting on the red traffic light.
Zachery David Cullen and his passengers in the Freightliner, Daquan Anterrio Shealey, Sidney Wayne Williams, and Kyle Alan Leigh all received minor injuries and were transported by MEDIC to local hospitals. A passenger in the Toyota, Javon Harvell, was also transported by MEDIC to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries. All drivers and passengers in this crash were wearing seatbelts. Alcohol or drug use is not suspected for the drivers of the Freightliner, Toyota, and Nissan. Speed, driving the wrong way/ left of center, and failing to yield the right of way are all contributing factors for the Chrysler in this crash. Alcohol and drug test results for Gregory Pettis are pending.
The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Detective Crum with the Major Crash Investigations Unit at 704-432-2169.
