On Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at 9:17 a.m., North Division officers responded to an injury crash on West W.T. Harris Boulevard at the intersection of I-485 involving a tractor trailer and Nissan Murano.  Upon arrival, officers found a 2005 Nissan Murano that had struck the side of the trailer of the truck in the intersection and had come to rest under the trailer.  Medic and the Charlotte Fire Department also responded to the crash.  The driver and front seat passenger of the Nissan were both pronounced deceased on scene by Medic.  Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, Crime Scene Investigators, and officers from the Motorcycle Unit and DWI Task Force were called to the scene to conduct the investigation.  The North Carolina Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Division was requested to respond to conduct the inspection of the tractor and trailer.

The initial investigation has revealed the Nissan was traveling on I-485 inner loop and exited onto the off ramp to West W.T. Harris Boulevard.  The truck, a 2015 Volvo belonging to AAA Cooper Transportation (ACT), was traveling west on West WT Harris Boulevard.  The Volvo had come to a stop at the I-485 off ramp traffic signal.  After the light cycled green for the Volvo's direction, the truck accelerated into the intersection.  The Nissan, which was traveling on the off ramp at an excessive speed, failed to stop for the red traffic signal for its direction and entered the intersection.  The Nissan collided with the side of the trailer.  Both the driver and front seat passenger of the Nissan were pronounced deceased on scene from their injuries.

The driver of the truck, Tracy Stephan Green, immediately brought his truck to a stop after the collision.  Mr. Green remained on scene and was interviewed by detectives and screened for impairment.  No impairment was detected for Mr. Green.

Excessive speed and failure to stop for a steady red light are contributing factors for the driver of the Nissan Murano.  The crash remains under investigation.  Any person who witnessed the crash or has information about the case is asked to call Detective Oberer at 704- 432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
