North Division - Homicide in the 4600 block of Gibbons Link Road

Saturday, February 16, 2019,

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 4600 block of Gibbons Link Road in the North Division.  The call for service came in at 8:12 p.m. on Friday, February 15, 2019.

North Division officers responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon.  When they arrived they located a male victim in the roadway who had been shot.  The victim was transported by MEDIC to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.  The victim has been identified as Robert Demarcus McManus, DOB: 6/26/1997.

Homicide and North Division Detectives responded to investigate this case.  Crime Scene Search responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence.  Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team and Operations Command responded as well.

The investigation has revealed that on February 15, 2019 at around  8:10 p.m., Robert McManus damaged an unoccupied vehicle on Nathan Drive by smashing a window.  He then approached a female sitting in a different vehicle which was parked in a driveway on Gibbons Link Road and punched her in the face without provocation.  This female victim has indicated that she did not know McManus and that the assault was unprovoked.

McManus then continued to jog down Gibbons Link Road when the male suspect drove up in a car.   As the suspect was driving past McManus, he threw himself onto the hood of the suspect's car.   When the suspect stopped the vehicle, McManus then smashed out a window of the vehicle at which time the suspect shot him.  The suspect then drove down the street for about 100 yards, stopped, and immediately called 911.  When officers arrived the suspect surrendered to the officers and voluntarily came to CMPD Headquarters to speak with Detectives.  The gun used in the shooting was located and seized as evidence.  At this time it appears that the suspect and victim did not know each other prior to this incident.

This case will be presented to the District Attorney's office who will review the evidence and determine if the suspect will be prosecuted.  The suspect's name will not be released unless he is formally charged with a crime in this investigation.

This is an ongoing, active investigation.  As further information develops it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.
