***UPDATE*** North Division - Homicide in the 2800 block of Hosta Drive

Charlotte, N.C. - (Wednesday, March 18, 2020) - Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit have charged Jaiveon Khalil Smith, DOB: 12/14/2001, for the murder of Tevonte Laquan Epps.

As a result of continued investigation, Homicide Unit detectives identified Smith as a suspect in this case, and warrants were issued for his arrest.  Detectives with the CMPD's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) worked with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the United States Marshals Service and the Richmond County Sheriff's Office to locate and arrest Smith in Georgia.  Smith was interviewed by the CMPD's Homicide Unit detectives and is currently in custody in Georgia.  He will be extradited back to Mecklenburg County and charged with murder, attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill inflicting serious injury and robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Charlotte, N.C. - (Tuesday, March 17, 2020) - The victim in this case has been identified as Tevonte Laquan Epps, DOB: 07/24/1995.  His family has been notified of his death.

Charlotte, N.C. - (Monday, March 16, 2020) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 2800 block of Hosta Drive in the North Division.  The call for service came in at 9:39 p.m. on Monday, March 16, 2020. 

North Division patrol officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service.  Upon arrival, officers located a male with a gunshot wound in the parking lot of the apartment complex.  MEDIC transported the victim to Atrium Health's Carolinas Medical Center- Main where he was pronounced deceased.  A second victim was located nearby who was also shot during this incident. He was also transported by MEDIC to the hospital where he is being treated for non-life threating injuries. The victims' identity will be released pending family notification. 

Homicide Detectives are currently canvassing the area to determine whether there are any additional witnesses to this incident. 

Crime Scene Search responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence.  Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team, Victim Services, CFD, MEDIC and Operations Command responded to the scene. 

This is an ongoing, active investigation.  As further information develops it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.
