Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, February 17, 2020) -- On Monday, February 17, 2020, at 10:39 a.m., officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's North Division responded to a collision with injuries in the 6400 block of Old Plank Road at the intersection of Almora Drive. Officers arrived to find a 2014 Ford F-150 Raptor with front-end damage and a 2002 Honda Accord with driver's side damage. Both vehicles had come to final stop off the roadway on the grass shoulder. The female driver of the Honda was trapped inside the vehicle and unresponsive. A witness reported that the driver of the Ford had exited the truck and got into the front passenger seat of a black Toyota 4-Runner that had stopped at the scene. The 4-Runner, driven by a white female, fled the scene with the male driver. Medic and CFD responded to the scene and the female driver of the Honda was pronounced deceased. The CMPD Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, Motorcycle Unit, Crime Scene Investigators and the Medical Examiner's Office responded to the scene to conduct the investigation.
The preliminary investigation revealed the Ford F-150 Raptor was originally traveling north on Old Plank Road. The Honda Accord was stopped at the stop sign on Almora Drive waiting to turn left onto Old Plank Road. The Honda accelerated into the intersection into the path of the Ford, which was traveling well above the posted speed limit. The two vehicles collided in the intersection and crossed the opposing lane of travel where they came to a final rest on the grass shoulder of Old Plank Road. A witness stopped to assist and observed the driver of the Ford get into the Toyota 4-Runner and speed away.
Through follow up investigation by detectives and North Division officers, the Toyota 4-Runner and owner were located at another nearby address. The driver and registered owner of the Ford F-150 Raptor, identified as Michael Paul Himes, was also located at this address and brought voluntarily to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department to be interviewed by detectives. At the conclusion of the interview, Himes was arrested and transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office. He has been charged with Driving While Impaired, Felony Death by Vehicle, Involuntary Manslaughter, Felony Hit & Run, and Reckless Driving.
The owner of the Toyota 4-Runner, identified as Lauren Elizabeth Kerr and girlfriend of Himes, was also arrested for her involvement and charged with Aid and Abet Felony Hit and Run. She has since been transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
The driver of the Honda was identified as Maniche Nichole Wilson. Her family has been notified of her death.
