Mecklenburg County, NC - Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services is excited to announce the development by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management of new capabilities for issuing electronic No Swimming Advisories through their CharMeck Alert system. No Swimming Advisories are issued by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services when there is a discharge of sewage to Lake Norman, Mountain Island Lake or Lake Wylie inside Mecklenburg County or when water quality monitoring data indicates conditions unsafe for human contact such as elevated bacteria levels.
Those living in Mecklenburg County who are interested in receiving these advisories must register for CharMeck Alerts at www.charmeckalerts.org and select the new Alert Subscription option entitled “No Swimming Advisory.” For those already registered, this new Alert Subscription will need to be added to the existing account via this website.
The CharMeck Alert system is not available outside Mecklenburg County; however, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management has developed a new system for receiving No Swimming Advisories by texting MECKNOSWIM to 888-777. The system will issue a confirmation text providing an option to add an email address to the text notification system.
This new system will significantly enhance Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services’ ability to issue rapid notification in the event of a No Swimming Advisory in Mecklenburg County; however, it only works for those who register. Everyone who lives on or recreates in Lake Norman, Mountain Island Lake or Lake Wylie is strongly encouraged to take responsibility for their health and safety by registering immediately.
