***UPDATE*** Metro Division - Homicide in the 700 block of Holland Avenue

Charlotte, N.C. - (Friday, January 17, 2020) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit have charged William Avoki, DOB: 01/30/2001, and a 17-year-old female for the murder of David Wayne Burns. 

As a result of continued investigation, Homicide Unit detectives identified 18-year-old William Avoki and a 17-year-old juvenile as suspects in this case.  On January 17, 2020, detectives with the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) located and arrested both suspects without incident.  After being interviewed by Homicide Unit detectives, William Avoki was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office and charged with murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill inflicting serious injury, two counts of discharging a firearm into occupied property causing serious injury, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.  The 17-year-old juvenile was interviewed, transferred to a juvenile detention center and has been charged with murder.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing.  As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Office.

Charlotte, N.C. - (Thursday, January 16, 2020) – The victim in this case has been identified as David Wayne Burns, DOB: 04/04/2000.  His family has been notified of his death.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing.  As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Office.

Charlotte, N.C. - (Thursday, January 16, 2020) –  Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 700 block of Holland Avenue in the Metro Division.  The call for service came in at 12:32 a.m. on Thursday, January 16, 2020. 

Metro Division patrol officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service.  Upon arrival, officers located a male inside of a vehicle with a gunshot wound.  He was pronounced deceased on scene by medic.  Two additional male victims were located nearby with gunshot wounds and both were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  The deceased victim's identity will be released pending family notification.  At this time, the relationship between the victims is unknown.

Homicide Detectives are currently canvassing the area to determine whether there are any additional witnesses to this incident. 

Crime Scene Search responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence.  Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team, Victim Services, CFD, Medic, K-9, SIB and Operations Command responded to the scene. 

This is an ongoing, active investigation.  As further information develops it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.
