Charlotte, N.C. – (Saturday, December 28, 2019) -- The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit is conducting a fatal hit and run investigation that occurred in the 3900 block of Glenwood Drive. On Friday, December 27, 2019 at 5:40 p.m., Metro Division officers responded to a call for service involving a bicyclist struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival, officers located a male juvenile victim in the roadway with life-threatening injuries. Medic transported the victim to Atrium Health's Carolinas Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased at 6:16 p.m.
A witness observed a newer model, gray Honda Civic sedan driving west on Glenwood Drive after striking the bicyclist. The witness described the driver as a black male, possibly in his 20's. The suspect vehicle was last seen turning onto northbound I-85 with the bicycle still underneath it.
At 7:20 p.m., the mother of the driver of the suspect vehicle called to report that her son had struck a pedestrian on Glenwood Drive earlier and wanted to turn himself him. The vehicle was recovered a short time later and was found to contain drug paraphernalia and to have been reported stolen.
The initial investigation has revealed that the bicyclist, a juvenile, was riding in the roadway in the 3900 block of Glenwood Drive near Hashem Drive. The suspect vehicle, a 2016 gray Honda Civic sedan was traveling west on Glenwood Drive and struck the bicycle. The juvenile was thrown onto the hood and into the windshield. The bicycle became stuck beneath the vehicle. The driver, Rodney Lycurgus McCorkle Jr., traveled a short distance before braking. The juvenile then fell off the hood of the suspect vehicle into the roadway. The suspect vehicle then continued on Glenwood Drive before turning onto I-85 North with the bicycle still stuck beneath it.
Excessive speed and impairment are not suspected as contributing factors in this crash. McCorkle was arrested and charged with Felony Hit and Run, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Possession of Stolen Vehicle.
