The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Unit is conducting a fatality crash investigation in the Metro Division. On Friday, October 11, 2019 at approximately 5:36 a.m., Metro Division officers responded to the 3600 block of Statesville Ave in reference to a motor vehicle versus pedestrian crash call for service. Upon arrival, officers located a 2011 Ford Focus operated by Sharon Lamore Gee and the pedestrian unresponsive in the roadway. Medic arrived on scene and transported the victim to Atrium Health's Carolinas Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased at 6:21 a.m. by medical staff. The CMPD Major Crash Unit was then contacted to conduct an investigation.
The preliminary investigation shows that the Ford Focus was traveling south on Statesville Ave in the right lane of travel, just prior to Carmine St. The Ford Focus struck the victim who was lying in the roadway. Just prior to the crash, the victim was standing on the sidewalk with other subjects and unexpectedly entered the roadway. The victim, while entering the roadway, fell into the right lane and into a prone position just prior to being struck. The Ford Focus stopped immediately and remained on scene.
Speed and alcohol are not factors for the operator of the Ford Focus. The victim was not in a crosswalk and alcohol use is unknown at this time. This crash remains under investigation and the CMPD Major Crash Unit is requesting the public's assistance in locating and identifying the additional subjects that were with the victim prior to this crash.
