Mayor Jennifer
Roberts announced today a $1 million grant from the Gambrell Family Foundation to
expand after school programs for Charlotte middle school students. The
investment will provide after school programs to more than 600 at risk students
who currently lack access to a program as well as offer micro-grants and continuing
education to program providers.
“After school programs help both students and parents,” said Roberts. “This
investment is a big step forward but more work must be done and I am committed
to working with our public and private partners to expand opportunities to the
thousands of teens who currently lack access to quality after school programs.”
The announcement was made with Sally Gambrell of the Gambrell Family Foundation
and Meck Ed’s Ross Danis, who partnered with Roberts to create Charlotte NEXT,
a public-private partnership with a mission to improve the quality and quantity
of out of school time opportunities for Charlotte youth.
