Charlotte,
N.C. – (Thursday, September 2, 2021) - Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg
Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are conducting an
investigation into a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred near the I-485
Outer Loop and Mallard Creek Rd.
On
Sunday, August 22, 2021, at approximately 11:47 a.m., University City Division
officers responded to the I-485 Outer Loop offramp at Mallard Creek Road in
reference to a single motor vehicle crash. Upon arrival, officers located a
2017 Ford Explorer and with damage. The driver, identified as Peter Robert
Demao, DOB: 06/16/1937, was transported by Medic to Atrium Health Main with
serious injuries. There were no other occupants inside the Ford at the time of
the crash.
On
Wednesday, September 1, 2021, Demao was pronounced deceased due to injuries
sustained in this crash. His family has been notified of his death.
The
CMPD Major Crash Unit has been assigned to investigate this crash. The
preliminary investigation revealed that the Demao was traveling on I-485 Outer
Loop when he exited at Mallard Creek Rd. Demao traveled up the exit ramp and,
at the split, continued straight into the grass median, entering the
intersection of Mallard Creek Rd. After crossing the intersection, he struck a
concrete barrier and rotated counterclockwise to the other side. The victim was
wearing a seatbelt, and speed is not a factor; however, impairment is unknown,
pending a toxicology test result.
The investigation into this collision is active and ongoing. As
additional information develops, it will be released by CMPD's Public Affairs
