Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, February 14, 2022) - On Thursday, February 3, 2022, at approximately 8:36 a.m., Westover division officers responded to West Blvd at Remount Rd in reference to a single-motor vehicle and pedestrian crash call for service. Upon arrival, officers located evidence in the intersection and located a 2000 Toyota Solara and the victim, Charles Scott, at 1349 West Blvd. The operator of the Toyota, Kerrington Hood, and her passenger, Stephaun McWaine, were also on the scene. MEDIC arrived and transported Charles Scott to Atrium Health Center Main with life-threatening injuries. Kerrington Hood and Stephaun McWaine did not sustain any injuries in this crash. The CMPD Major Crash Unit and Crime Scene Investigations responded to the scene to conduct an investigation.
The preliminary investigation shows that the Toyota Solara was traveling east on West Blvd in the left lane, and just prior to reaching the crosswalk located on the west side of the intersection, the victim was struck. The victim was crossing West Blvd south to north outside of the crosswalk and against the pedestrian signal. At the time of the crash, the Toyota had the right of way to continue straight through the intersection. Speed and impairment are not contributing factors for Hood and the Toyota in this crash. Impairment is unknown for the victim. However, a toxicology report is pending. Failure to yield the right of way to the Toyota appears to be the contributing factor, and weather may also be a contributing factor due to the weather conditions at the time of the crash being rainy and low light.
On Saturday, February 12, 2022, at 4:49 p.m., the victim was pronounced deceased by Atrium Health Center Main due to injuries sustained in this crash. The family of the victim has been notified of his death. At this time, there are no pending charges.
This is an ongoing, active investigation. As further information develops, it will be released by CMPD Public Affairs.
