Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, February 14, 2022) - On Monday, February 14, 2022, at approximately 6:54 a.m., officers responded to the 2100 block of West Mallard Creek Church Road in reference to a motor vehicle crash call for service that involved a pedestrian. Upon arrival, officers located a 2001 Buick Envision and a pedestrian that had been involved in a crash. The pedestrian was located with life-threatening injuries. MEDIC arrived on the scene and pronounced Michael-Luther Ross Black; DOB: 10/30/2002, deceased at 7:04 a.m. due to injuries he sustained from the crash. The driver of the Buick, Ronald David Evans; DOB: 04/29/1957, remained on scene and did not sustain any injuries. Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, officers from the Motor Unit and Crime Scene Search responded to investigate.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the pedestrian, Michael-Luther Black, was running south across West Mallard Creek Church Road in a crosswalk when he was struck by a Buick Envision being driven by Ronald Evans. The Buick was traveling east on West Mallard Creek Church Road and had a solid green light in its direction of travel at the time of the crash. The pedestrian was crossing West Mallard Creek Church Road while a solid red hand was displayed on the pedestrian crossing light. The driver in this crash was screened for impairment and was found not to be impaired at the time of the crash. Speed is not suspected to be a factor in this crash. The family for Michael-Luther Black has been notified of his death.
