Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, May 27, 2021) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal collision that occurred in the 900 block of Louise Avenue in the Eastway Division.
On May 26, 2021, shortly after 3:00 a.m., officers responded to reports of a collision in the 900 block of Louise Avenue. Upon arrival, officers were advised by train personnel that a CSX Cargo train struck a pedestrian. They also located an unresponsive male on the tracks along the 900 block of Louise Avenue. Medic responded and pronounced the male deceased on scene. The male has been identified as Carvoia Patton, DOB: 08/22/1976. His family has been notified of his death.
The CMPD's Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force, Motorcycle Unit, and Crime Scene Search responded to conduct the investigation and collect physical evidence. The preliminary investigation indicated that Patton was lying between the tracks as the train approached. The engineer and conductor on the train sounded the horn several times and began to slow. The train was then placed into emergency braking. Patton made no attempt to get off the tracks to avoid being struck. Speed is not a factor that contributed to the crash from the train. Impairment is suspected from Patton, but toxicology reports are pending.
The investigation into this collision is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by CMPD's Public Affairs Office. Anyone who witnessed or has information about the crash should contact Detective Oberer at 704-432-2169, extension 3. The public can also leave information anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or http://charlottecrimestoppers.com/. The report number for this case is 20210526-0302-05.
