Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, December 14, 2021) – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Major Crash Investigation Unit is conducting an investigation into a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in the 500 block of Huntsmoor Drive.

On Monday, December 13, 2021, at approximately 8:49 p.m., officers from the Steele Creek Division responded to Atrium Health - Pineville in reference to a child, identified as Mateo Jaciel Ayala-Martinez, DOB: 02/07/2020, who sustained life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle. At the hospital, officers spoke with the victim's parents and were able to identify the incident location as 516 Huntsmoore Drive. Officers responded to the incident location and located a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado, which is the vehicle involved in this collision. The father of the victim, Elgar Orlando Ayala, was identified as the driver of the Chevrolet when the crash occurred.

The CMPD Major Crash Investigation Unit and Crime Scene Search responded to conduct the investigation. The preliminary investigation indicates that Ayala went outside his residence to move the Chevrolet from where it was parked in the driveway to a different location within the same driveway. Ayala advised that he pulled slightly forward before beginning to back up, which is when he heard Martinez yelling. He advised that when he exited the vehicle, he observed that he had just hit Martinez with the pickup truck. Martinez's mother was inside the house when the crash occurred, and both parents had reason to believe that Martinez was also inside. The parents transported Martinez to Atrium Health Pineville. Shortly after his arrival, Martinez was flown to Atrium Health Main due to his life-threatening injuries.

On December 14, 2021, at 4:24 a.m.,  Martinez was pronounced deceased by hospital staff. His family has been notified of his death.
